What is an AI-native EHR?

An AI-native EHR is one where AI agents are first-class users of the system. They can take actions across the EHR using the same underlying infrastructure as humans, with appropriate access controls and a full audit trail.

AI in EHRs can be classified into AI-enabled, AI-powered and AI-native.

The difference between AI-enabled, AI-powered and AI-native

TermWhat it usually meansExample
AI-enabled EHRA conventional EHR with one or more AI features addedAn EHR adds an AI scribe
AI-powered EHRAI drives several meaningful workflows, but the underlying product may still be a traditional EHRAI generates notes, drafts messages, and automates coding
AI-native EHRThe product was designed from the ground up around AI, structured data, and automationAI can understand the full patient record, take actions across workflows, and continuously improve how care is delivered

The distinction that matters most is architectural.

  • AI-enabled: AI is a feature.
  • AI-powered: AI is an important capability.
  • AI-native: AI shapes the underlying product, data model, and workflows.

Avon: the AI-native EHR for next-gen care

Avon is an AI-native EHR that allows care delivery companies to build new models of care without being constrained by rigid technology, legacy systems. Built to adapt and scale alongside their operations.

Patient engagement, the medical record, practice management, and the revenue cycle run on one API surface and one stream of events. Every agent in the system has the same reach across all of them. A referral that arrives in the morning becomes a charted, verified, and scheduled patient without a member of your team working through each step.

AI Search is one example. It answers questions across the entire patient record, which it can only do because the entire record is within its reach.

AI Search

Search, and talk to, your patient's chart and records

Ask in plain English
Any question about the patient, in your own words
Searches chart, notes, labs & documents
Across years of records
Answers with citations to the record
Every statement traces back to its source
Jump straight to the source
An answer in seconds instead of twenty minutes of digging

The AI Scribe is another. While it is documenting the visit, it compares what it hears against clinical guidelines and the open care gaps already on the chart, then raises them to the clinician in the live transcript. Nudging on a care gap means reaching outside the encounter and into the rest of the record while the encounter is still happening.

AI Scribe

Live nudges while the visit is happening

Encounter is being scribed
The live transcript captures the visit
Listens for relevant context
Compares transcript details to guidelines and open gaps
Adds nudges to the live transcript
Ask about medication adherence. Confirm last eye exam date.
Prompted at the point of care
Care gaps addressed before the encounter ends
